NEW YEAR GREETINGS
A very happy new year to all of you, fellow Kenyans.
2012 is likely to be a pivotal year for Kenya, and Kenyans. It is a year when we shall have our first elections following the post election violence of 2007/2008. Perhaps even more importantly, is the fact that this is the year in which Kenya shall have its first elections following the promulgation of the Constitution. As Kenyans, we have the opportunity to make 2012 the year of “transition”. It is entirely up to us!! We can effect the transition towards a peaceful, just, cohesive, and prosperous nation. Or, we can remain a fragmented, poor country where the rule of law is but a dream.
Our Constitution is reform-oriented. It has a Bill of Rights that is as progressive as can be found in any Constitution in the world. The Constitution provides for the much needed checks and balances between the different arms of Government. Integrity in leadership is enshrined in the Constitution. And very importantly, we have devolved power, authority, and resources to forty-seven (47) counties. In short, we have the ultimate governance framework.
The Coalition Government, under the leadership of the President and the Prime Minister, has held together, despite many odds. Ofcourse, there have been challenges, and many instances of tension. But this is the nature of coalition governments. What is important to note is that in the last four (4) years, Kenya has made great strides. We are not quite there yet! But there are numerous indicators of movement, progress, and reform. Institutions and systems have been established that will serve us well now, and for years to come.
And to you, fellow Kenyans living in America, much has been given. And much will be expected. My expectations of you are high. And I have no doubt that you can (and will!!) do Kenya proud in 2012. My expectations of you, are high in all aspects. With the provisions in our Constitutions, you must now take your responsibilities more seriously than ever before. These responsibilities are social, economic and political. Kenyans living abroad can not afford to be “observers”. Here in America, where the largest of our diaspora is to be found, you have the opportunity to make a difference, and to be a part of the solution to many challenges facing our beloved Kenya. My challenge to you is that you provide leadership from where you are – here in America!! Kenya needs all the help possible to become a more cohesive and united country. If we can not be cohesive and united here (10,000 miles from home!!) then, do not expect unity and cohesion in Kenya!!
Finally, together with the team here at the Embassy, I wish you a year of good health, peace, justice, unity and prosperity.
God Bless Kenya.
