STUDENTS IN THE U.S
Employment Authorization
The Embassy is receiving calls from students who have been notified by the immigration & Naturalization Service to depart the country for various reasons but mostly for working illegally. Please note that since September 11, 2002 there have been a lot of changes in the immigration laws in this country. Accepting employment without authorization from INS is illegal and will result in immediate deportation. As a student on F1 visa, you are encouraged to contact the International Affairs Office of your school for assistance in obtaining employment authorization. Usually, this is facilitated at the discretion of INS to enable students obtain practical training in their areas of study.
Reinstatement to F-1 Status
F1 students can fall out of status with INS in several ways. These include dropping below a full course of study, or allowing their I-20 date to expire or failing to follow transfer procedures from one school to another. Being out of status means that a student will no longer be eligible for benefits such as practical training, on campus employment, or transfer to another school. Keep yourselves updated all the time to avoid unnecessary disruption of your studies.
